Case Study: Remedial Pruning for Hope Island

In estates and residential complexes where street trees are not managed by the council, maintaining their health, safety, and appearance becomes the responsibility of the body corporate. This is where Oasis Tree Management can assist.
We were recently engaged in Hope Island to carry out remedial pruning across several established street trees, including mature Poincianas.
These environments require a thoughtful, consistent approach to tree care that balances safety, aesthetics, and long-term tree health.
Trees in managed estates provide significant environmental and social benefits. They provide shade, enhance the streetscape, and contribute to the community's overall value. However, without proper maintenance, they can present a range of issues, including:
The goal is not simply to “cut back” trees, but to manage them correctly. If storm-damaged limbs (snap-outs) are not properly cleaned up and pruned back to the branch collar, trees can become vulnerable to disease and eventual dieback. Similarly, over-pruning or incorrect pruning practices can cause long-term decline.
Pruning must strike a careful balance, maintaining aesthetics while protecting tree health. When trees are not pruned to Australian Standards, it can also promote excessive epicormic growth, leading to ongoing maintenance issues.
Importantly, the cost of removing and replacing a declining street tree far outweighs the investment in maintaining established trees,
especially considering the time and care required for them to mature.
Our qualified arborists approach each tree individually, applying industry best practices and species-specific knowledge. We focus on:
Every decision is made with the long-term health and presentation of the tree in mind.
Poinciana trees (Delonix regia) are a popular street tree throughout South East Queensland. Growing up to 10 meters tall, they feature a wide-spreading canopy, vibrant red flowers, and distinctive seed pods. Originally native to Madagascar, they are now widely established across Australia.
Hope Island Resort is lined with mature Poinciana trees that provide shade, habitat, and strong visual appeal. However, due to their broad canopy structure, limbs can extend significantly over roads and infrastructure. In this case, branches were encroaching over the roadway and obscuring a retaining wall street sign.
Oasis Tree Management was engaged to carry out remedial pruning along the entrance. Our assessment determined that a reduction in lower limbs, combined with canopy lifting, would achieve the desired outcome, improving clearance and visibility while maintaining the natural shape of the trees.
All pruning was completed in accordance with Australian Standards. Reduction cuts were performed on the branch collar to ensure proper sealing and healthy regrowth.
